Biography
CJ Ryan is a professor of law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, joining the faculty in 2024. He is also an affiliated scholar at the American Bar Foundation and an academic affiliate at the International Center for Law & Economics.
Dr. Ryan teaches Income Tax and Law & Economics. He has previously taught Estates & Trusts, Property, Secured Transactions, and Statistics for Lawyers. In addition to writing in the doctrinal areas in which he teaches, much of his research centers on the economic and legal incentives to which individuals and firms respond across a variety of sectors. An interdisciplinary scholar, he has written more than 30 articles that have appeared in law reviews—such as the Alabama Law Review, Georgia Law Review, Florida Law Review, and Illinois Law Review—specialty journals at Harvard, NYU, Berkeley, Georgetown, and Notre Dame, and peer-reviewed journals. He is a recognized expert in legal education, trust law, non-profit law, and the law surrounding student loans. His scholarship has been discussed in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Above the Law, and Inside Higher Ed, among other media outlets. He received an A.B. from Dartmouth College, a M.Ed. from the University of Notre Dame, a J.D. from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. When he is not teaching, researching, or spending time with his family, he enjoys running, hot yoga, live music, and college football.
