Professor Pieples served as a Teaching Professor at Syracuse University College of Law from 2006 until 2024. During that time, he directed three clinics: the Securities Arbitration and Consumer Clinic (2006-19), and the Criminal Defense Clinic (2019-24), and in Fall 2024, created SU’s new Housing Clinic. Pieples was active in consumer law related issues as a member of New Yorkers for Responsible Lending and testifying before the NY State Senate on predatory auto finance.

He also coached several teams for the Advocacy Honor Society. His teams won medals at the St. John’s Securities Triathlon and the ABA Client Counseling Competition. SU’s AHS honored him with the Executive Director Award in Spring 2024, the first faculty member to be so honored. He was also awarded emeritus status upon his retirement from SU.
From 1997 to 2006, Professor Pieples was a Senior Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Cincinnati where his practice focused on housing issues including landlord-tenant law and foreclosure defense. Professor Pieples pioneered the use of Ohio’s nuisance abatement statute in occupied rental properties. He was also instrumental in the passage of several ordinances in the City of Cincinnati including the Vacant Building Maintenance License Law and an ordinance regulating lease with option to buy contracts.
