The solution lies in Rule 106, often called the "remainder rule" or the "rule of completeness." When part of a statement is offered out of context, the remainder is admissible when necessary to restore the context. Although Rule 106 refers to written statements, all courts interpret the remainder rule as applying to both written and oral communication.
