I would argue that this testimony is not hearsay because it is not offered for its truth. There is no issue in the case about what Newt was doing, so the relevance of this testimony must lie elsewhere -- in this case, relevant to explain why Elvis hired him.

Note that in arguing that a statement is not being offered for its truth, you must also explain what relevant issue it IS being offered to prove.
