Dear Friends,
This is an historic time for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. In November 2007, Indiana University announced its billion dollar campaign for scholarships, Matching the Promise. The Law School is proud to be a part of this momentous campaign, and we have been working hard to define and achieve our own goals.
Our primary objective in this campaign is to raise the reputation and visibility of the Law School. Achieving this goal will bring Indiana’s premier public law school into the most elite ranks—into the top ten public law schools in the United States. Back in 2003, we set an ambitious goal of $30 million for the campaign. As I write today, we have already substantially exceeded that goal, thanks in large part to the transformative generosity of Michael and Janie Maurer, the Lilly Endowment, and leaders among our alumni and friends. In light of our success, we have raised our goal to $88 million. There is still work to be done, and still a place for every one of our alumni and friends in the campaign.
Our students need the support of those of us who have gone before. For more than two decades, the steady decline in state funding for public law schools has forced the Law School to place an increasing reliance on tuition. This trend threatens the values associated with public education—particularly, the value of access for the brightest students, regardless of their financial backgrounds.
We cannot afford to let highly qualified students turn away before they approach our door. We cannot remain competitive and improve our ranking among top-tier law schools without the resources necessary for recruiting and retaining an exceptional class of law students. Today’s students are tomorrow’s alumni, and the world judges us by their achievements.
Your gift counts. Our alumni and friends have already risen to the challenge, and I know that together we can provide the scholarship assistance necessary to recruit the students who will advance the reputation of Indiana Law and become the next generation of generous donors.
More than 20 years ago, I came to this great school as a single mother. Without my scholarship, I could not have entertained the idea of entering law school, nor could I have stayed. I am grateful for the generosity of the donors who made possible the best opportunity of my life, and I am excited about the opportunities this campaign will provide for our future alumni. I thank you for all of your support, and I urge you to consider carefully what your gift could do for the school.
