Meet New Admissions Staff

Stop by the Admissions Office from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to welcome two new staff members and tour our newly renovated space. The Admissions Office will host an open house for students, faculty, and staff with coffee, juice, and pastries.

Abby Yankovich has assumed the new position of Director of Admissions Operations. She is a graduate of Purdue University and comes to us after serving that school as an Assitant Registrar for several years. She will oversee the management of application files and serve as a liaison to other admission-related offices on campus. She will also play an intregal role in managing an upcoming migration to a new LSAC-provided application database.

Barbara Burke is our new Admissions and Recruitment Assistant. You may have seen her in the halls over the past few months as she served the same role in a temporary capicity. She brings to our work many years of experience from managing corporate and medical offices in Massachusetts, Tennessee and Florida.

Symplicity Training

CACR Speaker Series: Frank Stajano, Cambridge Computer Laboratory

The Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) Speaker Series features Frank Stajano, University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Stajano will present "Ubicom Authentication: Resurrecting Duckling and Multi-Channel Security Protocols Authentication," at noon in the Faculty Conference Room (335). Pizza and drinks will be available.

At IUPUI, Stajano's talk will be streamed to room IT414 of the Informatics and Communications Technologies Complex (ICTC). ICTC is located at the corner of West Street and Michigan Avenue. Please go to the main lobby of IT to gain access to Room IT414 -- this is a secure building.

Stajano is a tenured faculty member at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and the author of "Security for Ubiquitous Computing" (Wiley, 2002). He is interested in security and privacy issues for the electronic society and in electronic gadgets of all kinds. Prior to his academic appointment, he worked as a research scientist for leading corporations such as Toshiba, AT&T, Oracle, and Olivetti, earning firsthand experience about technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and patents. Elected a Toshiba Fellow in 2000, Stajano has given more than 30 invited and keynote talks around the world. For more information, visit his Web site at

Community Service Opportunity

Those interested in volunteer community service, future tax/business careers, or just building up their resume should consider participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) program this semester. This free tax service has been offered nationally by the IRS since 1975. It is a volunteer clinic that prepares and electronically files basic tax returns at no cost for low income, elderly, and disabled persons in the local Bloomington community. If you are interested, attend the meeting at noon in room 124. Lunch (not pizza) will be provided. Training will be available for those interested, but who don't know how to file a basic tax return! It's easy. The program is headed this year by JD/MBA student Kurt Eckert ( with assistance from JD student Itzie Jenkins ( Please e-mail if you are interested and cannot attend the meeting.

Public Interest Internship Program Workshop

The Office of Career and Professional Development presents a B547 Public Interest Internship Program Workshop from noon to 1 p.m. (room TBD). The Law School permits students engaged in unpaid legal work for nonprofit, government agencies, judges, or legal services organizations to receive up to four credits during the summer through this program. In order to participate, a student must secure an internship and complete an academic component for credit. Attend this workshop to learn more. RSVP on Symplicity.


Professor Rob Fischman's 2004 article, "The Meanings of Biological Integrity, Diversity, and Environmental Health," has just been reprinted in a new book titled Bio-Diversity and Conservation: International Perspectives (A. Usha ed. 2007).

In addition, Federal Judge David Hamilton, in his recent opinion upholding the "tier one" analysis for the new-terrain I-69 highway, cited and quoted Fischman's 2004 article, "Predictions and Prescriptions for the Endangered Species Act," to help sort out the relationship between the procedural challenges and the substantive allegations related to the treatment of the endangered Indiana bat in the environmental analysis. Hamilton's opinion is Hoosier Environmental Council v. U.S. Dept. of Transportation, 2007 WL 4302642 (S.D. Ind. Dec. 10, 2007).


One-on-one Career Coaching

The Office of Career and Professional Development presents One-on-one Career Coaching with Robyn Holtzman, JD'01 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Faculty Conference Room (335). This event is open to all students. Holtzman is a legal search consultant with Kimball Professional Management in Chicago. During one-on-one career coaching, students may bring copies of their resumes for feedback. Sign up for individual sessions via Symplicity required to secure a 20- minute time slot. Holtzman is a specialist in the Chicago and Washington, D.C., legal job markets.

The Legal Job Search in Washington, D.C.

The Office of Career and Professional Development presents The Legal Job Search in Washington, D.C., from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and Wednesday, Jan. 23, in room 123, the Moot Court Room. This event is open to all students. Robyn Holtzman, JD'01, a legal search consultant with Kimball Professional Management in Chicago, will provide information useful to students interested in interviewing with employers in Washington, D.C. Holtzman will discuss the current markets for entry-level attorneys in D.C., as well as strategies for job-seekers in that market. Prior to joining Kimball in 2007, Holtzman was a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C., office of Arnold & Porter. She served as the associate representative to the firm's Management Committee, as well as on the Associates' Committee, the Partner Evaluation Committee, the New Associates Committee, and Women Lawyers of Arnold & Porter. In 2006, Holtzman served as Arnold & Porter's loaned associate to the Legal Aid Society of D.C. Holtzman clerked for The Honorable Sarah Evans Barker in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana from 2001 2003. While in law school, she served as editor-in-chief of the Federal Communications Law Journal, was a finalist in the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition, and competed as part of the School's National Trial Competition Team.

CJAM to Offer Mediation Training

Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) will offer a 32-hour basic mediation training on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17 and March 1 and 2, in rooms 214 and 216. The program is intended for those interested in becoming volunteers for CJAM's community mediation program and for those who want to want increase their skills in communication, negotiation, and mediation. The principle trainer will be Professor Emeritus Ed Greenebaum, who was the first to offer courses in Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution at IU School of Law and who, in retirement, has been a mediator and case manager with CJAM. The fee for the training will be $200; limited scholarships will be available for those who cannot afford the full fee. Interview Seminar

The Office of Career and Professional Development and the Indianapolis Bar Association presents an Interviewing Seminar from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22 (room TBD).

The Art of Effective Interviewing

The Office of Career and Professional Development presents the Art of Effective Interviewing from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, March 23, in the Moot Court Room. Interviewing is a skill you will use for the rest of your professional life. Plan to attend this engaging and entertaining event presented by Jon Vegosen, founding partner of Funkhouser Vegosen Liebman & Dunn Ltd., a vibrant, small-sized law firm in Chicago. Vegosen will perform a roleplay with Randi Kohn, director of administration and development and also give you an opportunity to ask questions. Funkhouser will be recruiting Indiana Law students in 2008, so they are eager to meet you and share their wisdom about the art of effective interviewing and tell you about their firm. In addition to learning about interview techniques, this is a great opportunity to network. So plan your first-impression wardrobe accordingly. All students are welcome sign up on Symplicity. Directed Reading Opportunity for Spring 2008

A professor of school law from the School of Education is looking for a few law students to assist with her undergraduate school law course. Law students would assist with lesson plans, grading, and some teaching. Topics addressed in the course include church/state relations, student speech rights, special education law, teacher privacy rights, tort law, and teacher contracts. The course meets on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The time commitment would be approximately 3-5 hours per week, and students can receive 1 directed reading credit. This is not a paid position. Admissions Tour Guides Needed

The Admissions Office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and will need additional assistance from Tour Guides. Tour Guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. It's exam and outlining time. Are you starting realize you need supplements? Would you like to get a head start on buying your books for next semester? Either way, come to the SBA BOOKSTORE. We have supplements and textbooks for almost every course with prices that beat buying them new! Also, don't forget to bring your old books and supplements in to earn some cash as those loans run out at the end of the semester!

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
