Saranya Kalaiselvan had never heard of the Maurer School of Law until the Admissions Office invited her to apply. Accepting the invitation has opened many new doors.
Why Indiana Law? The offer of a fee waiver enticed me to apply, and I was very interested in the school’s Practice Group Advisor program, which pairs small groups of 1Ls with a 2L/3L mentor. I’m going to be the first lawyer in my family, and I knew I would need help adjusting to the law school experience.
What are the benefits of the PGA program? Being in a practice group gave me an immediate, close-knit set of friends to help me stay motivated. And my practice group advisor was great — always there for me. I still keep in touch with my first-year practice group.
Life in Bloomington: To be honest, though I had lived abroad, in the US I’d never been outside California until I moved to Indiana! It was a difficult transition, but coming to Bloomington made it easier because it’s a relatively small town. Last summer, I clerked for Judge José Rodriguez, JD’80, in Miami, and now I’m interested in litigation and international transactions. Coming to Maurer has definitely broadened my horizons.
Advice for law students: Don’t have any pre-conceived notions. I read a lot about law school and talked to several lawyers before school started, but you still have to experience it yourself.
