California-born Iris Holbrook knew nothing about Indiana Law before she received an invitation packet from the school asking her to apply. Impressed by the materials, she applied and was accepted, so she decided to visit campus. “The campus visit is what really got me hooked,” she says. “No school’s overall package measured up to Indiana Law. The treatment I received from the admissions team and the warmth of the students was unparalleled.” Since she’s been a student here, that hasn’t changed. “I appreciate how much the school has done for me,” she says. “It really shows that they sincerely care about me as an individual. Others have said it, but it’s true—here, you are more than just a number. I want to spread the word to people from the West: Come out here and see what a great opportunity Indiana Law is!”
What’s great about Indiana: “I like that I can walk to school within 15 minutes. I like the cost of living. I like getting a great education from a well-respected school. I like that Bloomington is pet-friendly, as I have a Great Dane and a Lab. I like seeing what it’s like living in a different part of the country. Did you know the pizza is different here than out West?”
The atmosphere: “The students are friendly to each other and helpful. Even when it’s finals time and there’s stress in the air, the students crack jokes and laugh together. There’s a sense of camaraderie here that speaks volumes about the relationships between students. While everyone is striving to do their best, Indiana Law is not a cutthroat environment.”
The Indiana Law community: “I like being able to tell the school if I’m having a problem and they listen, care, and help when they can. I don’t feel alone here, even though my family is three-fourths of the way across the country.”
Classroom to Clerkship: “The firm experience that I gained in the summer of 2007 was indispensable. I was able to put my classroom experiences into action. In the summer of 2008, I clerked for the Indiana Court of Appeals. When I applied for the position my professors and the admissions office were behind me every step of the way.”
Why I want to be a lawyer: “With a law degree, I’ll have the ability to help people and really make a difference in people’s lives. I want to put my bilingual skills to work: right now I am interested in immigration law, other public interest, and mediation. There are so many wonderful opportunities out there.”
