Degrees Offered at the School of Law
Juris Doctor (J.D.) This is the bread-and-butter degree for anyone who wants to practice law in the United States. We award around 200 of these each year.
We also offer several degrees as part of our graduate program, which is designed primarily for internationally trained lawyers. Our graduate degrees are:
Master of Laws (LL.M.) This degree requires one academic year in residence. We have two different LL.M. options, depending on whether you prefer a more scholarly or a more practical focus.
- LL.M. Thesis: Ideal for students who are interested in academic careers. Requires students to write a substantial research paper.
- LL.M. Practicum: Exposes students to the American legal system at work.
Master of Comparative Law (M.C.L.) For legal practitioners looking for a focused course of study with fewer course requirements than the LL.M.
Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) An advanced, research-intensive program, that leads to writing a doctoral thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law and Social Science Interdisciplinary program offered jointly with the Indiana University Graduate School.
Certificate in Legal Studies A short-term immersion program.
