Our Programs, Clinics and Centers

First-year students ("1Ls") take a set of required courses that introduce the basic institutions and doctrines of the law. These courses teach students to read closely, reason carefully, research and write well, and "think like a lawyer"—vital skills in the legal profession.

Courses in trial skills and mediation teach students to think quickly and analytically.

Our graduation requirements give you great flexibility designing a course of study in an area of focus.

Clinical Programs

Many upper-level courses help students develop skills "on the job" in clinical programs and settings. Among our clinics are the Family and Children Mediation Clinic, the Community Legal Clinic, and the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic, to name but a few.

Beyond the Classroom

About half our students participate in three student-run law journals. We also offer opportunities that provide practical legal experience, including moot court competitions and participation; trial teams; and faculty-sponsored internships and externships. Students also benefit from the increasing roster of multi-disciplinary Centers.

Beyond the Law School

For students who want to enhance their educational experience by studying overseas, we will help find the right study abroad program. You can also take part in one of our international programs that bring the world to Indiana, or earn a joint degree with one of the other departments or schools at IU.

Academic Regulations

The Law School's academic regulations include information about degree and program requirements, academic honors requirements, and more.
