An important part of the career exploration process is taking part in experiential opportunities that will help you determine how your values, interests, personality, and skills best fit into the legal profession. By pursuing a clerkship, externship, fellowship, or internship, you can test-drive a particular legal career, gain valuable work experience, and build a professional track record.
Judicial clerkships are among the most rewarding and prestigious ways to enter the legal profession. Indiana Law has a strong tradition of graduates earning judicial clerkships in federal, state, and appellate trial courts. The Guide to Judicial Clerkships assists you in researching, applying for, and attaining a clerkship at the state or federal level.
Judicial clerkships are prestigious and rewarding, and many Indiana Law students, faculty, and alumni have held clerkships.
An externship gives students the opportunity to gain experience in a practical setting during the academic semester. Indiana Law offers several externships that also offer academic credit. Learn more about externships.
A merit-based fellowship can assist students interested in pursuing specific research paths and can support the acquisition of an advanced degree. Learn more about fellowships.
An internship is an experiential opportunity in the nonprofit or public interest job sector for which you are eligible to earn academic credit. Indiana Law students can pursue an internship through the Public Interest Internship program or the Independent Clinical Project. Learn more internships.
