Loving Law, from South America to Midwest America
Maribel Morean, LLM’08

Maribel Morean has always been fascinated by the law. Her father was a lawyer, and she continued the family tradition by earning a law degree in her home country and landing a job as a corporate lawyer at Pepsi-Cola Venezuela, where she was in charge of the day-to-day business of the company and its legal matters. But Morean has always wanted to work in the area of intellectual property, and thought a U.S. law degree would help her reach that goal. When she started researching LLM programs, Morean realized Indiana Law was the place for her. “I had the chance to talk with several friends who were enrolled in IU, and they were very enthusiastic about the university and the courses they were taking at that time. Since I was interested in doing an LLM program here in the United States, I checked the rank of the law school and found it very impressive.”

Why I love Indiana Law: “The legal and human skills that I’m acquiring here are priceless, and they will give me a great advantage in my country or in any other country in which I would like to practice law. Equally important for me is the chance to know people from all over the world and understand that we can become great friends and colleagues, independent of nationality, race, social, or religious background.”

Life after law school: “The most exciting thing after getting my master’s degree will be that I’ll be able to apply all the lessons that I learned at IU and work as an intellectual property (IP) lawyer. I truly believe that IP has a lot of possibilities for lawyers all over the world, and I am confident that the skills and tools that I am getting from Indiana Law will help me fulfill my career goals.”

My amazing professors: “My experience with my law professors has been amazing. At the beginning, it is not easy for an international student to understand the class methodology of American universities, but the professors are very aware of that fact and they cooperate and help us to get through the process.”
