Apply to the exchange program

Application priority date

For fall semester or full year: February 1

For spring semester: October 1

Failure to apply by the stated deadlines could delay the processing of visa documents necessary to make your travel arrangements. It is not possible to begin the semester after the first day of classes.

How to apply

We receive applications from two types of exchange students. Please be sure that you are reviewing the information for the appropriate type of program below.

Non-degree exchange students from our partner institutions

Indiana Law welcomes up to two non-degree exchange students nominated by our partner institutions per academic year. Students may begin in the fall (mid-August to mid-December) or the spring (early January to early May) semester.

To apply, non-degree exchange students must be nominated by their home institution to participate in the exchange program. Nominated students should then complete the Indiana University online electronic application, or eApp.

To complete the eApp, select "Law Special Programs" as the academic program to which you are applying, and then select "Law Nondegree Exchange" as the academic plan. Please note that the eApp will require you to pay a mandatory application fee by credit card before submitting the application, and the law school will reimburse you upon matriculation.

You should use the corresponding upload spaces on the eApp to provide your personal statement and resume, and use the "Departmental Questions" upload space for your academic transcripts and test scores (if available). Alternatively, you may send supporting documents to:

William Schaad
Indiana University Maurer School of Law
Baier Hall
211 South Indiana Avenue
Bloomington, IN 47405

Students participating in the non-degree exchange program may earn up to 12 credits per semester. Upon completion of the LLB at their home institutions, exchange students may apply to return to Maurer Law for the LLM program and use up to 12 exchange credits towards the LLM degree.

Non-degree exchange students will receive a waiver of tuition (up to 12 credits) and mandatory fees. They are responsible for their own travel, books, room and board, mandatory insurance and miscellaneous expenses.

Degree-Seeking LLM Exchange Students from Partner Institutions

The following institutions nominate one graduate student or faculty member each academic year to pursue the LLM degree:

  • China University of Political Science and Law
  • Lewis Arthur Grimes School of Law of the University of Monrovia
  • Warsaw University
  • Zhejiang University Guanghua School of Law

The home university should provide the Assistant Dean for International Programs with the name and contact information of the LLM nominee by February 1. Nominees should then complete the Indiana University online electronic application, or eApp.

To complete the eApp, select "Law Special Programs" as the academic program to which you are applying, and then select "Law Graduate Exchange" as the academic plan. Please note that the eApp will require you to pay a mandatory application fee by credit card before uploading the application, and the law school will reimburse you upon matriculation.

You should use the corresponding upload spaces on the eApp to provide your personal statement and resume, and use the "Departmental Questions" upload space for your academic transcripts and test scores (if available). Alternatively, you may send supporting documents to:

Director of Graduate Admissions
Indiana University Maurer School of Law

Unless otherwise noted, LLM exchange students will receive a waiver of tuition (up to 24 credits) and mandatory fees. They will also receive international student health insurance. They are responsible for their own travel, books, room and board, and miscellaneous expenses.
