Visiting and exchange students

Visiting JD students

If you are pursuing a JD at another ABA-approved law school and would like to visit Indiana Law for one or two semesters, please note that you must submit the following information by July 15 (for the fall semester) and October 15 (for the spring semester):

  • A letter of good standing from the dean at your current law school. This letter must also state that you will earn credit at your home law school for courses taken at Indiana Law. Also, the letter needs to address any conditions that might attach to coursework, including what courses your dean has approved for you to take at Indiana Law. The letter should come directly from the dean's office.
  • An official law school transcript.
  • A statement from you indicating your reasons for wanting to visit Indiana Law.
  • A statement from you indicating your state of residence.

Non-degree exchange students from our partner institutions

Indiana Law welcomes up to two visiting non-degree exchange students each year, nominated by our partner institutions. You may begin in the fall semester (mid-August to mid-December) or spring semester (early January to early May).

You must be nominated by your home institution to participate in the exchange program and then complete the Indiana University online eApp. To complete the eApp, select "Law Special Programs" as the academic program to which you are applying, and then select "Law Nondegree Exchange" as the academic plan. Please note that the eApp will require you to pay a mandatory application fee by credit card before uploading the application, and the Law School will reimburse you upon matriculation.

Send all supporting documents (résumé, statement of purpose, university transcripts, and TOEFL scores if available) to:

William Schaad
Director of Graduate Admissions
IU Maurer School of Law
Baier Hall
211 South Indiana Avenue
Bloomington, IN 47405

If you participate in the non-degree exchange program, you may earn up to 12 credits per semester. Upon completion of the LL.B. at your home institution, you may apply to return to IU for the LLM program and use up to 12 exchange credits towards the LLM degree. Non-degree exchange students will receive a waiver of tuition (up to 12 credits) and mandatory fees. You will be responsible for your own travel, books, room and board, insurance, and miscellaneous expenses.

Application deadlines

  • For fall semester or full year: February 1
  • For spring semester: October 1

Failure to apply by the stated deadlines could delay the processing of visa documents necessary to begin your studies. It is not possible to begin the semester after the first day of classes.

LLM exchange students from our partner institutions

In addition to non-degree exchange opportunities, many of our cooperation agreements with our partner institutions allow the partner to nominate a graduate student or faculty member to pursue the LLM degree at Maurer, in lieu of or in addition to nominating non-degree exchange students. Please consult with the international programs director at your law school to find out whether your law school is participating in the upcoming academic year
